MoonGear got its start in 1997 with an interest in the World Wide Web. What started out as a weekend project for owner and founder William Michael Love, soon grew into a successful brand.
Michael was building a personal web site for himself and wanted to have dynamic content in the form of a search engine. He wanted visitors to be able to search the web without having to leave his site. Other search engines at the time were offering links to their search results, but this would not cut it.
Michael, having been writing software for well over a decade at this time, looked to Perl as the scripting solution to achieve his goal. Soon, a dynamic and customizable application was up and running that dynamically displayed results from the ODP on his web site. A short time thereafter, other noobies in the world started to notice his application and inquired as to how he had accomplished this. Realizing there was an apparent need for web based software, MoonGear was born.
The application sold for a mere $50. It was soon used on hundreds of web sites around the world. Some web site owners did not have the hosting services required to run the software and as a result MoonGear was often asked to host it for them. With this demand, MoonGear began offering hosting packages that supported a variety of dynamic needs.
A producer of a TechTV show (now known as G4) stumbled upon MoonGear.com. She telephoned stating that the design of the site really struck them and they wanted to feature MoonGear Hosting on a 30 minute Cable TV program. After the show aired, MoonGear saw a significant increase in inquiries for hosting, design and software development.
Due to the demand of more scalable web based applications, MoonGear began using the PHP scripting language for its development projects. PHP, (Personal Home Page) was then a young and new scripting language with yet an impressive 10% installation rate on all the Internet's servers. MoonGear's PHP projects made it at one time the single largest user of the PHP scripting language in the world. In fact, MoonGear was called upon by Zend Technologies for suggestions to PHP 5 before it was released in July of 2004.
With a vested interest in nearly 200 Internet properties, MoonGear continues to provide programming, consulting and web design services.
